THEATER SUB-COMMITTEE MEETING
DATE: 27 May 2010, 3:30pm-5:00pm
SUBJECT: Performing Art Center Conceptual Design
ATTENDEES: See attached sign-in sheet
The following are the highlights of the meeting:
Erwin Lee (EL) gave a power point presentation of the latest plans and design studies
of the new Theater (Schemes B and E) and recapped the Facilities Steering Committee
and Neighborhood meetings.
The highlights of the presentation included:
• During the last Theater subcommittee meeting, the committee had narrowed the
design options to two, schemes B and E. Photos of the site show that the site is
most visible from the campus driveway of Embarcadero Road.
• Schemes B and E were shown with a site plan using the latest Landscape
Master Plan, plan diagrams of both floors, 3D aerial views showing relationship
to the campus, perspective views with photo overlay, and two 3D model views.
• Schemes B and E are both about 29,000 SF and incorporate the same program
elements.
• Scheme B takes design cues from Haymarket Theater and Tower Building. Its
signature element is a curved façade and a rotated house that helps to minimize
the apparent mass of the fly loft. It relates to the campus by using compositional
elements found on campus.
• Scheme E is a frontal building with all masses parallel or perpendicular to the
campus buildings. Its signature element is a tall gable roofed lobby,
2. EL explained that the FSC reviewed the presentation and after listening to the
subcommittee recommendations voted and preferred scheme B.
3. Caroline Willis (CW) asked about having scheme B with a curved front. EL
explained that this is the same as a previous reviewed schemed, D, but because of
the angles the spaces were limited and was not a chosen schemed by the
subcommittee.
4. Michael Najar (MN) was concern about acoustic and explained that his class just
recently performed at Saratoga High School’s new performing arts center and was
surprise on the acoustic difference between the main stage and the house. He
asked DLM to address acoustic to meet the specific program needs for Choir and

Orchestra. EL explained that the Shalleck group acoustician will soon be
addressing the acoustic design elements after the conceptual design approval.
5. The subcommittee asked about the Board Meeting presentation on June 1. EL
explained that subcommittee members are encouraged to attend and explain the
progress of the program and plan development.
