Planning & Design Meetings Media Arts Program Meeting No.1 4/22/2009 - MinutesMedia Arts Building Palo Alto High School 22 April 2009 Page 1 PALO HIGH SCHOOL Palo Alto Unified School District PROGRAM MEETING NOTES DATE: 22 April 2009 SUBJECT: Media Arts Program Meeting No.1 ATTENDEES: Paul Kendall, Paly Esther Wojcicki,Paly Margo Wixsom, Paly Ellen Austin, Paly Jacquie McEvoy, Paly Paul Stickney, PAUSD/OCMI Erwin Lee, DLM The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the media arts programs and the program needs of the proposed media arts building. The following are the highlights of the meeting: 1. Paul prepared a presentation describing the key principals that should be incorporated into the new facility. The Walter Cronkite Building (CB), the new home of the ASU School of Journalism and Mass communication, was used as an example throughout the presentation to illustrate the key principals. Paul distributed the powerpoint presentation to all. 2. The new facility should be planned as a “community center for news.” A key term used to describe the activities within the media center was “convergence.” An idea where interaction and interface fosters creativity. A key feature of the CB is a central atrium space with multiple viewing and interaction opportunities that is used as a forum. All spaces connect to or pathways lead through the forum creating the physical idea of “convergence.” 3. Some of the desired spaces in the media arts building: • Formal Reception/Gallery—adjacent to the central atrium, a space that one passes through rather than an isolated destination, security is important due to the late hours that the program operates • Classrooms and Labs • Meeting Spaces • Dining Area – kitchenette with tables, students are often there late and parents bring food in, need place for serving • Basic building services: restrooms, storage, etc. Paul to expand the above list and to identify other spaces required. Also, describe how these spaces will be used. Forward to Erwin. 4. The media arts building will also accommodate studio arts programs necessary for growth. These program/classes have are not been determined. 5. It was suggested that many of the existing photo and darkroom equipment can cabinets can be reused in the new facility. The existing darkroom is much larger than is Media Arts Building Palo Alto High School 22 April 2009 Page 2 necessary due to the increase in digital photography. The new facility may have four (4) enlarging stations and associated equipment. 6. The building should be designed to “embrace all platforms,” meaning print, web, internet, broadcast, photography, etc. Paul suggests that at some point the robotics program might find a place in the new facility. 7. The building should have a transparent feel to it so that the programs inside are reflected outside both symbolically and physically through the architecture. Possibly monitors that can be seen from the outside as students pass between the media arts building and the 100 building from Embarcadero. 8. Desirable Features: • For security reasons, restroom that are internal to the building • Portion of building that overlooks the parking (might be difficult given proposed location on campus). • Better site lighting at buildings and paths of travel • Disaster supplies—what is the protocol for emergencies late at night • Transparency within building—glass walls • Shower facility for those working late hours • Secured storage areas with classrooms and building 9. Next Steps: Compile list of rooms and spaces that can be organized into a spatial diagram. END Prepared by Erwin Lee of Deems Lewis McKinley.
