MEETING NOTES
DATE: 1 October 2009, 12:15pm-1:00pm
SUBJECT: Math Department Schematic Design Meeting No. 1
ATTENDEES: Radu Toma, Gunn Aimee Lopez, OCMI
Christopher Ades, DLM Faculty of the Math Dept.
The following are the highlights of the meeting:
1. Aimee Lopez called the meeting to order and reviewed with the faculty the layout
and interior design of the proposed Math/Social Sciences building.
2. Chris Ades (CA) presented an updated set of enlarged floor plans and interior
elevations. These incorporated the comments from the previous Conceptual Design
meeting. The group studied it in detail and the ensuing discussion was as follows:
Office Area (including Staff and Work areas)
Radu Toma (RT) explained how it would be nice if teachers could circulate
around the sky-lighted atrium. He also mentioned that the conference room may
be too large and that it needs to fit six people at the most.
The group asked for a secure room for the copy machine. Glass walls would be
nice but it needs a lockable door. It’s desirable to include a centrally located copy
room by the current Work Room.
RA noted that the conference room needs to be private and should have minimal
glass walls. CA noted that the conference room could move to the perimeter,
opening up the central area. It’s decided that CA will study design options.
One teacher asked if the Staff Room might be more accessible to the students.
The group considered switching the location of the staff room with the resource
room but decided that teacher privacy is important too. It’s decided to include an
easy to use intercom at the Resource Room so that students can call for a
teacher without going into the office area.
Classrooms
The teachers identified the preferred teaching wall locations for each classroom.
The teachers studied the interior elevation drawings and decided that at the
hallway high windows with one lower window by the door was appropriate.
The teachers studied the location of the built-in cabinets. It’s decided that the
best location for these is below the exterior windows for the exterior classrooms.
Below interior (clerestory) windows there will be marker boards.
The teachers expressed a desire for a 24-foot long marker board at the
“teaching wall” and a 16-foot long marker board at the adjacent wall.

3. RT asked that the drawings remain with him so he can discuss them further with the
staff. CA noted that he will incorporate the changes into the drawings and can
provide more descriptive drawings for a follow-up meeting.
