Planning & Design Meetings Science Department: Program Meeting No.2 5/12/2009 - MinutesPALO HIGH SCHOOL Palo Alto Unified School District PROGRAM MEETING NOTES DATE: 12 May 2009 SUBJECT: Science Department: Program Meeting No.2 ATTENDEES: Kathy Lawrence, Paly Erwin Lee, DLM Jacquie McEvoy, Paly Dean Schmitz, DLM Tom Hodges, PAUSD/OCMI Paul Stickney, PAUSD/OCMI The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the science department’s program and the program needs relative to the laboratory conversion project. The following are the highlights of the meeting: 1. The science department does not want to give up the two small classrooms by converting them into laboratory space. They can defer the need for laboratory space a year or two. 2. If the construction of the laboratory space is pushed out, Kathy suggest that it might become part of the Career Tech Ed (CTE) building which would have a symbiotic relationship with the existing robotics and engineering programs. A biotech program could be expanded as well in the CTE building. The CTE building is the preferred location for the future science laboratories. That is, defer and build two labs later than a single lab now. It was noted that the CTE Building is further down the Master Plan project list (Group 4). 3. Jacquie mentioned that she will be writing CTE grants and that this should help the overall building program and development. 4. The laboratory could also be located temporarily, if necessary, in the 700 Building since there will be available space in the future and the building has existing rooms with plumbing. Even if the special education program moves into the 700 Building, they will not utilize the entire building. Jacquie suggest the 400 Building is better suited for special education since a classroom was recently remodeled in this building for them. 5. The difference between the needs of a physics and biology lab were clarified by Kathy. The physics classroom needs wall space and room darkening; biology needs water and lab space. 6. No immediate needs for the science department. Leave the existing laboratories as is. END Prepared by Erwin Lee of Deems Lewis McKinley.
