Planning & Design Meetings 4/16/2014 - MinutesPALO ALTO HS FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING Palo Alto Unified School District 16 April 2014 P. 1 PALO ALTO HIGH SCHOOL Palo Alto Unified School District FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING DATE: 16 April 2014, 3:45-5:00 pm SUBJECT: Palo Alto HS Facilities Steering Committee ATTENDEES: See attached sign-in sheet The following are the highlights of the meeting: Projects in Planning Performing Arts Center (PAC) Update: 1. The PAC project is currently out to bid with bids due on 13 May. New Indoor Athletic Facilities 2. The plans are currently being reviewed for ways to reduce cost and value engineering opportunities. Some of the cost reduction measures being implemented or considered are:  Pull the landscape portion of the project out of the base contract work. This work will be performed separately by the district.  Eliminating the basement connection between the two gyms. This would also eliminate the need to reroute the pool piping.  At grade level, change the arcade connecting the two gyms to open air in lieu of an enclosed conditioned space. Glazing on the pool side of the arcade would be replaced with a screen or fence material to secure the pool area.  Eliminate some of the interior pool showers (approx.40) and replace with exterior showers at the pool deck.  Eliminate the bleachers in the small gym.  Change the floor finish in the locker room areas to sealed concrete in lieu of epoxy.  At the main gym, eliminate the finished ceiling and expose the structure above similar to the portion over the courts. 3. In order to bridge the funding gap, additional dollars could be reallocated from the Tower Building project and the proposed CTE project. Adequate funds would be set aside for the Tower Building so that the elevator and restroom improvements could be constructed. As the proposed CTE program has become clearer, it is believed that an addition to the existing 700 Building and use of the 300 Building would suffice and that an entirely new building is no longer necessary. PALO ALTO HS FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING Palo Alto Unified School District 16 April 2014 P. 2 The resulting funds reallocated to the Indoor Athletic Facilities (IAF) is therefore: $4.46 m from the Tower Building $2.42 m from the CTE building __________________________ $6.88 m reallocated (actual amount may differ) A vote was taken to reallocate the funds for the IAF. The vote was unanimous in favor of reallocated the funds. 4. The 700 Building will undergo minor alterations in order to accommodate the PE department that will take over the space as the IAF is under construction. 5. The project is currently at DSA for plan check review. The contractor, Vance Brown, does not want to re-price the project until the DSA comments are known. 6. Given the current construction schedule, the pool will be in service through June. Demolition of the existing gym will occur in July or August of this year. 7. The striping for the badminton courts need to be reviewed. The concern was expressed that when the bleachers are in the closed position it may interfere with maximizing the number of courts. Construction Update Classroom and Media Arts Building: 8. The contractor is addressing punch list items. Furniture has been moved into the second floor of the Classroom Building and will be ready to occupy as soon as IT completes installation of the servers and other devices. The first floor move will occur during the summer. 9. The Media Arts Building move will occur during the summer Public Comment 10. The question was asked who is officially on the FSC committee. With some of the participants being replaced by new members, it would be helpful to publish an official list. It was noted that it is a public meeting and anyone is welcomed to attend.
