WORLD LANGUAGES
1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

2. DEFINITION OF SPACES NEEDED TO SUPPORT AUXILIARY GYMNASIUM
Number of Rooms / Areas
Total facility is 6,000 SF
Types and descriptions of rooms:
a. Classrooms 5 @ 960 SF = 4,800 SF
b. General Office 640 SF
c. Staff Area 320 SF
A. CLASSROOMS
General Description:
Standard classroom for world languages (12 total for department)
1. Capacity per classroom
24-36 students
Rooms are also used for world language clubs
2. Adjacencies / Campus Location
• Close proximity to the existing world language classrooms
• Close proximity to existing world language lab
• Access to outdoor space, many activities require outdoor area
• Provide general storage area for all world language classrooms
• Desirable to have office in new cluster
3. Room Layout:
• Square in shape of approximately 30 FT x 32 FT
• No interconnection or adjoining doors between classrooms
• Entry to classroom from the back, this configuration is best for classroom
observation purposes
• Markerboards on single wall (16-20 FT)
• Storage required for props, etc.
4. Equipment /Furnishing Provisions and Arrangements:
• Map hanger hooks at markerboard
• Projection screen
5. Finishes
Floor:
• Linoleum (carpet is not desired) verify District Standard

Walls:
• Tack panel wherever possible
• Doors to have vision panel
Ceilings:
• No special height requirements, dictated by architecture
• Acoustical attenuation
6. Interior Environment
Natural / Artificial lighting:
• Maximize use of artificial light from overhead and sides if possible,
protect against direct sunlight which could interfere with activities
• Control glare
• Use energy efficient lighting
Window Coverings and Room Dimming:
• Room darkening required via shades or screen, concern during
campus security
• Blackout curtains not required
Acoustics:
• Wall and ceiling surfaces should have some sound attenuation
• Acoustical insulation in walls
Natural /Artificial Ventilation
• Natural ventilation is desirable, cross-ventilation where possible
• Mechanical exhaust to enhance natural
• Air conditioning is desired
7. Flexibility / Multi-use Concerns:
• No special requirements
8. Plumbing Needs:
• Sinks desirable in new classrooms, existing world languages do not
require sinks
9. Electrical Needs:
Lighting:
• Energy efficiency lighting with A/B switching
• Lighting adjacent to markerboard separately controllable
• Dimming desired
• Provide light switching from front of classroom as well as near the
door
Power/Systems:
• Provide receptacles around perimeter of room
• Speakers for audio system desired
• Clock/speaker
• Telephone, communication to main office via handset

• Tall cabinet with wardrobe unit near front (36” wide unit)
• Base and upper cabinets with doors (4 units at 36” = 12 FT)
• All cabinets to have locks

B. GENERAL OFFICE
General Description:
Area where each instructor can have a desk or cubicle as well as provide space
for assistants or aids. Work area where department activities can occur.

12-14 work stations
2. Adjacencies / Campus Location:
• Adjacent to classroom and Staff Area
• Close proximity to the world language classrooms
3. Room Layout:
• Rectangular in configuration
• Provide storage
4. Equipment /Furnishing Provisions and Arrangements:
• To be determined

• Durable, impact resistant
• Tack panel where possible
Ceilings:
• No special height requirements, dictated by architecture
• Acoustical attenuation

protect against direct sunlight which could interfere with activities
• Control glare
