Planning & Design Meetings FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING 1/22/2014 - MinutesGunn HS FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING Palo Alto Unified School District 22 January 2014 P. 1 GUNN HIGH SCHOOL Palo Alto Unified School District FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING DATE: 22 January 2014, 1:00-1:45 pm SUBJECT: Gunn HS Facilities Steering Committee ATTENDEES: See attached sign-in sheet The following are the highlights of the meeting: Projects in Design or Planning Central Building Project: 1. A presentation of the current schemes to the FSC committee with a brief history of what the original project was, how it fit into the master plan, and how it has evolved into its current configuration was given. The current scheme has the music programs attached to the existing Spangenberg Theater with a courtyard separating the classroom functions. A covered walkway connects the two program elements across the new courtyard. The classroom functions are oriented towards the existing quad. 2. The original project was a single story building and that a two-story version was presented as a possibility in April of 2012. The two schemes presented showed both a single story and two-story option. The single story scheme and the first level of the two-story scheme were similar. The two story scheme provides three additional classrooms and the College Career Center and Wellness Center on the second level. 3. The following were the comments to the presentation: a. The central copy room can be reduced in size to 300-400 SF. b. A large storage room can be created from reducing the size of the central copy room. The site has many storage demands including PTSA needs. Direct access of the storage room to the exterior is highly desired. c. A folding partition was suggested between the Activities Classroom and the adjacent Flex Classroom. The question was asked if it is being used in the current classroom building and if it is desired. The concern was expressed that the partition would provide adequate acoustical isolation between the rooms and how often it would be used in the open position. Further consideration needs to be given to this feature before a decision can be made. d. It was noted that adequate visibility to the exterior elevator exist and that a secured vestibule was not necessary. Gunn HS FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING Palo Alto Unified School District 22 January 2014 P. 2 e. It was noted that for acoustical reasons carpet might be a better floor material than linoleum for the second floor. f. Secured golf cart storage needs to be accommodated whether it’s part of this building’s program or located elsewhere on campus. All of the golf carts (5 total) do not need to be stored in the same location. It was suggested that since one of the carts is for Activities use, that theirs might be located near the Activities program areas. g. The committee was reminded that this is only the conceptual design phase and that the design will evolve as more detailed information becomes available. The location on site, the configuration of the building, and the program elements is what is important in the conceptual phase. h. The committee voiced a strong desire to pursue the two-story scheme.  A vote was taken to determine if the conceptual design to move forward for approval by the Board of Education (BOE). The vote was unanimous. The project will scheduled tentatively for the BOE meeting on February 25, 2014. E and K Building Modernization Update: 1. The construction documents have been submitted to the Division of the State Architect for plan review. At this time, 2 of the 3 plan check sections (access and fire) have completed their review. The structural safety section is still under review. Construction Update Miranda Avenue project: 1. The Miranda Avenue project is currently on schedule. The weather has helped this project progress. 2. It was noted that much of the louder construction activity has been completed. Next Meeting Tentatively scheduled for February 19, 2014 Public Comments: The questions was asked how the building will be decided whether it’s the one or two- story scheme. Tom Hodges (TH) responded that both schemes will be presented to the Board of Education (BOE) for review. The two schemes will be developed into the schematic design phase where a budget will be prepared for each scheme. The BOE will evaluate and give direction to staff at that time.
