Palo Alto Unified School District
FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
DATE: 05 May 2010, 12:30pm-1:30pm
SUBJECT: Gunn HS Facilities Steering Committee
ATTENDEES: See attached sign-in sheet
The following are the highlights of the meeting:
1. Aimee Lopez (AL) reported that the April 27, 2010 CEQA meeting with the BOE
went well.
• A question about the report was raised concerning an item in the initial report
about the removal of bus passes from the traffic mitigation study. Bus passes
mitigation was removed due to the inability of establishing a long term
commitment with the VTA. The District however, would continue to pursue
obtaining an agreement with the VTA.
2. Erwin Lee (EL) highlighted the revisions or improvements to the Landscape Master
Plan. The revised plan addresses several concerns brought up during the input
phase.
• Implementing an “oak field” feel/approach to the campus
• Creating a pathway within the campus
• Removing grass areas under the existing tree drip lines in order to provide
better maintenance of the site
• Providing multiple spaces within the overall court/quad area adjacent to
Spangenberg Auditorium.
• A question was raised about the type of hardscape material that would be used.
EL indicated various types would be employed such as pavers, permeable
concrete, concrete paving, etc. Other site elements such as benches would
also be used although would have to be verified if covered in the bond
language.
The FSC approved, unanimously, the Landscape Master Plan, providing that the
Landscape sub-committee meeting will have no comments. The Landscape sub-
committee will occur on May 6 and if the revised master plan is approved, it will be
passed on to the BOE.
3. Aimee Lopez (AL) presented an update on the HVAC project as follows:
• DLM is currently working on the preliminary phases of this project
• DSA submittal around mid-September of 2010

• Ready to bid around the beginning of the next year.
• Possible scheduling scenarios were discussed (during spring and summer
breaks or while school is in session). Tom Hodges (TH) suggested that since
previous projects were done during the school year, this project could follow a
similar implementation.
4. Aimee Lopez (AL) noted that a preliminary planning meeting for the Performing
Arts, Student Center and Spangenberg Lobby project will occur on May 6. Erwin
Lee (EL) added the process for this project will be very similar to the classroom
and gym projects. The first meeting would be to confirm program spaces (i.e.,
inventory of existing spaces and their use) with future meetings addressing
Spangenberg lobby and the reduced scope of modernization.
5. Alex Morrison (AM), with Gilbane Building Company, gave an update on the
Relocatable Project as follows:
• Kick-off meeting May 6 with contractors
• Staff items have already started be boxed up ready to move
• Village removal of trees will occur (change to the original contract) this summer
for modular relocation.
• It was suggested that signs should be placed on the trees to be removed and
around campus giving notice to what is going to occur on site (bike paths,
Arastadero Avenue, PTA, District website, etc.). This was to reduce the
possibility of having similar issues arise during the California Avenue Project.
6. Public Comments:
• Henry Jackson (HJ) asked if seasonal sun studies had been done for the master
plan. Erwin Lee (EL) indicated that the landscape architect had taken that into
account with the new master plan.
• Although the master plan entry was discussed, the entire site shall be included.
• Master Plan was approved by the FSC.
7. Upcoming Meetings:
• BOE – 11 May (update for all projects to be presented/information only)
• Landscape Subcommittee meeting – 02 June at 3:30 pm
