FACILITIES STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
DATE: 02 December 2009, 12:30pm-2:00pm
SUBJECT: Gunn HS Facilities Steering Committee
ATTENDEES: Sign-in sheet (attached)
The following are the highlights of the meeting:
1. Noreen Likins (NL) welcomed the committee, introduced student participants and
opened the meeting.
2. Architect Erwin Lee (EL) shared that the presentation to the Board of Education
(BOE) has been scheduled for next month, 12/8/09. The presentation given was
originally prepared for the BOE.
3. EL began the power point presentation explaining the various design and plan
developments to date:
The Classroom Building A now has labs on each floor along with 14 classrooms.
The over-sized classroom was omitted to allow room for the enlarged
administration area and the Lab. The Resource Room has been made more
rectangular.
The courtyard of Classroom Building A was reduced to make room for the larger
administration area, but it’s still generous and will allow significant light.
The World Language Classroom has more shading devices. An Arrastradero
sidewalk view was shown of the building that highlights this feature.
EL noted that to introduce more variety the mansard roofs were not repeated in
the new structures, but rather the new sloping roofs are compatible with the
existing buildings and residential character of the area. The new buildings are
also connected by covered walkways with similar scale and size to the exisitng.
A view of the Gym from the parking area was presented that showed the scale
of the new to existing Gym.
Updated plan of the existing Gym showed a reduced scope of work which now
includes: a new 500 seat bleacher on one side only, minor changes to convert a
Locker Room to two classrooms, and the conversion of the fitness area to a
wrestling room.
Before and after views of the plans and building perspectives were shown to
highlight the differences.
These projects will be CHPS verified projects that will qualify by satisfying

criteria in the categories of: sustainable site, water, energy, materials and indoor
environmental quality.
Slides were shown that illustrated the progress of the landscape master plan
including the tree inventory, tree mitigation criteria and tree studies at the new
buildings identifying trees to be removed and saved.
A participant commented that in order to allow for more sun to strike the
buildings, would the landscape architect consider more deciduous trees. EL
answered that yes, this would be an important consideration.
A participant asked if relocation of the substation was considered. EL said that
yes it was, but in order to maintain the existing connections the decision was
made to remain and keep costs down.
4. Tom Hodges (TH) noted that the District would not ask Gunn to offset the increased
operating costs associated with the addition of AC to the campus. He also asked
the group to vote on whether to pursue Option 1 or Option 2 for air conditioning the
existing buildings. NL noted that this vote was taken at the last FSC meeting. Option
2 was again chosen which means that the AC work will proceed for all buildings as
part of Group 1 work.
5. Aimee Lopez (AL) distributed an updated Interim Parking Plan that illustrated traffic
patterns and bicycles parking areas, both temporary and permanent. The following
discussion followed:
Tom Jacoubowsky (TJ) noted that the ratios of student and staff parking should
remain the same throughout the construction process. This means that some
parking in the main lot will need to be re-striped with labels as a number of staff
parking at Miranda will be lost.
A participant asked whether the bicycle parking would be covered. AL
responded that it was not planned for.
NL noted that the temporary bicycle parking area by the amphitheater is
undesirable as all the space is required for graduation. Chris Ades (CA)
responded that other locations are being considered.
A participant asked if the area by the Tennis sheds could be used for bicycle
parking. AL noted that this area will be part of the construction zone and not
useable. NL suggested that the group should walk the site to help determine the
best bicycle parking zones. AL agreed and will set up a site walk for the next
FSC meeting in January.
6. NL opened up the meeting to the public and discussion followed.
Participant asked what would happen to the tennis courts and tennis program
during construction. NL responded that like the swimming pool which was lost
for a while during construction of the new pool, the school would just do without
and find alternative facilities. She noted that the tennis courts would be
unavailable for 18-24 months.
Participant asked whether or not the projects could be done in stages to
minimize disruption. NL answered that in order to lower construction costs all
three new buildings would be constructed in tandem.
Participant expressed concern for the quality of the tennis program during the
down-time and cautioned against losing their current coach. NL answered that

like the pool program, the program may suffer some but that the school would
do their best to find alternative facilities satisfactory to the tennis coach.
TJ noted that the CM, Gilbane Construction, has a good track record for
project delivery and he’s confident the project will stay on schedule.
7. Schedule:
Next Monthly FPC meeting will be scheduled for Jan. 6th at 12:30 PM.
