Planning & Design Meetings Schematic Design Meeting #12, Community Meeting #1 4/26/2010 - Minutes Page 1 of 2 A E D I S Architecture & Planning Meeting Notes 1494 Hamilton Avenue, San Jose, CA 95125 408.264.2000 – Fax 408.264.250 PROJECT: Stanford Middle School Modernization & New Construction DATE: 04/26/10 MEETING: Schematic Design Meeting #12 PLACE: Cafetorium Community Meeting #1 PROJECT NO: 29034.00 TIME: 7:00 pm ATTENDEES: Sharon Ofek (Administration) Lori Alvarez (OCM) Eric Schuur (Parent/PTA President) Todd Walter (AEDIS Principal) Tom Hodges (OCM) Mariana Alvarez-Parga (AEDIS) Community Members (see sign-in sheet) Item # Community Input 12.1 New Classroom Wing a. Different ceiling height conditions on first floor and second floor classrooms. Community requested design team to pay attention at acoustical conditions in each space. AEDIS explained that the acoustical engineer in the team will study this. b. The community liked the proposed design for the new 2-story classroom wing. c. The community inquired on “night flushing” through the operable clerestories. District to confirm with maintenance staff. d. There was concern on how the soccer fields would be affected by the placement of the new building. Fields are used by the youth on Saturdays and by adults on Sundays. It is preferred that the fields are not reduced. District will coordinate with City of Palo Alto and request an accurate survey of the existing fields. e. The placement of trees on the east side of the new building was welcomed for its shading purposes but it might be a problem if placed right behind the goal. f. Height of the fence along the east face of the new building still needs to be defined. Some protection will need to be given to the windows for it’s proximity to the fields. g. Further research is needed to connect the campus to Mitchell Park. District will coordinate work with the improvements proposed at Fairmeadow ES and the new Community Center at Mitchell Park. 12.2 Existing Classroom Wings a. A community member was under the impression there were play areas in between wings. The school Principal confirmed it is not a current use. The proposed design will provide landscaped areas as well as new seating and gathering outdoor spaces. b. Design team to review access to the existing classrooms from the back side. Not all doors are currently in use nor needed as second exits. Those in use, such as the storage room in the 400 wing, will have a paved path instead of landscape. c. The placement of the 6th grade classrooms at the south end of the wings will decrease the amount of foot traffic through the open areas. It is preferred to provide more landscape than hardscape. Page 2 of 2 12.3 New Student Courtyard a. The community suggested the design team to look into a hybrid lawn at the terraced landscaped area that could support use from students. b. It was requested to provide more shade at the stage and seating area. Staff prefers to allow visibility to and from the existing courtyard and basketball courts. c. Heat island effect is a concern with the extent of the blacktop. Design team to evaluate if some trees, may be four, could be placed in or adjacent to the existing bike cage. 12.4 Other a. Tennis courts were upgraded two years ago. These are not part of this bond’s scope of work. End of Meeting Notes This information is the understanding of AEDIS Architecture & Planning of the various items discussed and agreed upon during the meeting.
