Meeting Subject: Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-First Grade
Meeting Date: 02/24/11, 12:00 PM
Location: Duveneck Elementary School
Those Present: John Lents Principal, Duveneck Elementary School (DES) Anne Gerfen DES Lori Alvarez OCMI Dan Goldstein GPA The following new items were discussed:
New Items Action By ITEM
1.1 Introduction GPA General update of scope and state of campus and first grade - new classrooms and modernization.
2.1 Current use and General Layout Ideally there would be enough space for group work on the floor plus space for each student to be at a desk.
Currently not enough space for everything so the library collection space/collection gets trimmed as it grows.
Morning is spent in rotation, 6 kids at a table stations, with some individual jobs.
A couple independent work areas are important.
First graders have problems reaching the paper towels and soap as they are now.
"L" shape classroom may be preferred.
Could explore tables instead of desks.
2.2 Storage Art work drying rack should be easy to access.
About 6' of low storage for math manipulables would be enough (~18" deep).
Sets of workbooks for the year need storage.
Easy access to large books is needed the guided reading table - perhaps 12' of low bookshelf.
An additional ~14' of bookshelf for the library is needed.
Art supplies are stored under the low cabinets - currently in the wardrobe closet.
Closet contains long term storage: Many file boxes for units such as "Around the World" (7 boxes), science equipment.
All classrooms all levels need space to store at least 2 35-gallon tubs in the closets.
2.3 Technology Future technologies will include iPad devices and similar, requiring only a cart or charging station which could be secure, or locked in a closet or office.
No computer stations needed.

2.4 Exterior Spaces Outdoor teaching spaces are useful.
Existing classrooms would benefit greatly from an enclosure so that students could be released into the space.
There should be a hose outside.
Turf surfaces could be explored.
New first grade wing should have main entry to north and "back yard" with buffer to the south. Mixed surface backyard space would provide opportunities for furniture and play.

Meeting Subject: Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-Second Grade
Meeting Date: 02/24/11, 9:30 AM
Location: Duveneck Elementary School
Those Present: John Lents Principal, Duveneck Elementary School (DES) Joe Young DES Lori Alvarez OCMI Dan Goldstein GPA The following new items were discussed:
New Items Action By ITEM
1.1 Introduction GPA General update of scope and state of campus and second grade.
2.1 Current use and General Layout Day consists of small group (4-5 groups) work and individual work at the same time.
Class begins on rug, located in front smartboard.
Currently this teacher's class is located in an oversized portable, and the extra space is very helpful.
Other teachers use furniture to define spaces. Low furniture is best for this, as supervision is important.
Sometimes small groups use the lunch table outside.
The future classroom may be movable everything.
Some teachers rely on technology heavily while others spend more time with the whiteboard.
Typical height for whiteboards okay.
Display space is important for second grade.
No maps or projector needed.
Wet area floor material can be about 20% of classroom, near the door for rainy days.
2.2 Storage Each classroom has a library of reading books, consisting of a reading desk and about 16'-24' of low bookshelf.
Coat hooks with cubbies (standard size okay) would be good, but amenable to coat hooks only, perhaps with a shelf for lunchboxes.
Hooks should be provided.
No issue with musical instruments.
Needs room for about 25 copy paper-sized boxes containing lesson plans.
Variety of shelving depth, as some existing shelving is too deep.
Flat art storage is used at all times.

Meeting Notes 2 of 2
Science requires counterpace.
OCMI One lockable cabinet should be provided.
High cabinets not needed.
Near sink casework should have doors. In general half casework should have doors, half can be open.
2.3 Technology Future technologies will include iPad devices and similar, requiring only a cart or charging station which could be secure, or locked in a closet or office.
No computer stations needed.
Lots of outlets are desired. A few outlets up high are useful, for charging things, lighting, or other teacher items.
2.4 Exterior Spaces Outdoor teaching spaces are useful.
A fence would make the "backyard" very useful for life science teaching, enclosed gardens, and connecting with the environment.
Space could be shared between 2nd grade classrooms.
Outdoor outlets could useful in this case.

New Items Action By ITEM
1.1 Introduction GPA General update of scope and state of campus and first grade - new classrooms and modernization.
2.1 Current use and General Layout Good day-lighting is very important.
Class has 22 students.
Lessons are introduced in the center of class on the rug in front of smart board.
2 tables in the back of class are useful for small group work (5-6) students.
Kids often work in pairs or 4's.
Rows and columns of desks are arranged behind the rug.
A smartboard flanked by whiteboard is ideal. Whiteboards are faster for posting things than tackboard.
Some whiteboard in back could be useful for small groups.
Tackable surfaces up high are okay.
2.2 Storage Long window counter is used to store math manipulables in small tubs.
Casework should be about 1/2 open and 1/2 with doors.
Counter could be 1/2 the length it is now.
Adjustable height shelving is best.
Deepest storage should be about 2.5' deep.
Library area for shallow book storage needed.
Coat hooks outside could replace cubbies.
4 filing cabinets are useful, thought existing ones are not built in.
Flat art storage for posters etc. can be vertical or horizontal.
Existing wardrobe closet is currently used for board games and "free choice" activities. Could be replaced with closet space.

Art drying rack is useful. Could be mobile, but with a designated nook.
Cubbies are used to organize student supplies. It is very accessible to students and the divisions help the students keep the tubs organized.
2.3 Technology Future technologies will include iPad devices and similar, requiring only a cart or charging station which could be secure, or locked in a closet or office.
No computer stations needed.
2.4 Exterior Spaces Teacher likes the outdoor spaces and planting beds outside of classroom 26.
Garden beds could be maintained by third grade teachers.
Outdoor spaces would be used by small groups and individual work.
Life sciences could be taught outside.
