Planning & Design Meetings Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-Library 2/9/2011 - Minutes 1 of 2 165 Tenth Street, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA 94103 tel 415.346.4040 fax 415.346.4103 mail@gelfand-partners.com www.gelfand-partners.com Meeting Notes Project: Project No: Meeting Subject: Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-Library Meeting Date: 02/09/11, 12:00 PM Location: Duveneck Elementary School Library Those Present: John Lents Principal, Duveneck Elementary School (DES) Doree Tschudy DES Nancy Pang PAUSD Rusty Tooley Barron Park Elementary School Lori Alvarez OCMI Larry Schadt Gelfand Partners Architects [GPA] Dan Goldstein GPA The following new items were discussed: New Items Action By ITEM 1.1 Introduction GPA General update of scope and state of campus and library. 2.1 General Layout The library should be thought of primarily as a classroom. (up to 36 students) After school programs include parent and teacher gatherings up to 30 people. Chess and math clubs also meet here after school, but no science, art or “wet” activity groups permitted. Check out procedures include lining up with books at reception desk, checking out book, and then lining up at door. A second door would be helpful. Up to 15% of the students (75-80) currently use the library’s computer bank at recess, though this isn’t likely to be permitted after the renovation. Teaching area and library can be separate. Teaching area needs visibility to the rest of library. Movable walls/whiteboards would be ideal (See the “D” Schol at Stanford). Dimmable lighting needed for smartboard. A hand washing station nearby would be helpful. As would be a sink in the office. 2.2 Exterior Some type of transparency between the future courtyard and to the east and the library would be wonderful. Perhaps a series of folding glass doors or similar. A simple outdoor reading area would work too. And a built in chess table. 2.3 Story Area Area to accommodate 24 K-1 students. K-1 collections should have a designated area nearby. Open space for child furniture. Duveneck ES 1004.00 Meeting Notes 2 of 2 “Stage” for teacher to read. Places 2.4 Storage/Shelving Mobile shelving allows for flexibility. Shelving needed for 15,000 books, increasing as the school gets new classrooms. Shelving should be low for visibility. Display areas at the end of bookshelves are good. Books on display get checked out quickly. 2.5 Office Needed for quiet, but requires visibility to rest of library. Used for processing new books. Adjacent to check-out desk would be ideal. 2.6 Technology Two computer stations needed at librarian desk. 3-4 computers needed for library catalog search. Future technologies will include iPad devices and similar, requiring only a cart or charging station which could be secure, or locked in a technology closet. Data jacks at circulation desk and office and others per district standards. End of Meeting Notes These notes will be considered substantially correct and complete unless otherwise notified in writing within five working days of receipt.
