Planning & Design Meetings Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-Fourth Grade 2/9/2011 - Minutes 1 of 2 165 Tenth Street, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA 94103 tel 415.346.4040 fax 415.346.4103 mail@gelfand-partners.com www.gelfand-partners.com Meeting Notes Project: Project No: Meeting Subject: Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-Fourth Grade Meeting Date: 02/09/11, 3:00 PM Location: Duveneck Elementary School - Library Those Present: John Lents Principal, Duveneck Elementary School (DES) Sophia Raza DES Lori Alvarez OCMI Larry Schadt Gelfand Partners Architects [GPA] Dan Goldstein GPA The following new items were discussed: New Items Action By ITEM 1.1 Introduction GPA General update of scope and state of campus and fourth grade. 2.1 General Layout Major concerns raised about the possibility of noise from other classrooms and vertical circulation. Smartboard could be flanked by two whiteboards. Other whiteboards in class not necessary – would prefer a mobile one that can be taken outside. Tackable surface too valuable. Lessons often started on the carpet in front of the smartboard. Later, students may be in groups of 4 around tables in different parts of the room. Shared closet may not be a good idea because of the shared responsibility and differing styles of teachers. Small closets would be preferred. Connecting the classrooms in pairs would be great. Double sink would be helpful for hand washing. 2.2 Storage Filing cabinets as currently exist in room 11 are valuable for lesson plans. Folding flat storage for art might be useful, depending on the teacher. Musical instruments are brought twice a week, but not worth having dedicated storage. Book shelves are needed. Coat hooks could be useful instead of cubbies but will need to be discussed. Closet could be used as secure storage. Due to the cubbies at right angles to the wall, the existing casework arrangement in room 11 is far less than ideal. Duveneck ES 1004.00 Meeting Notes 2 of 2 2.3 Technology Future technologies will include iPad devices and similar, requiring only a cart or charging station which could be secure, or locked in a closet or office. No computer stations needed. 2.4 Exterior Spaces Interested in exploring ideas for a patio. Outdoor teaching space would be new, as it is now it is too noisy for this, except for occasional 1:1 instruction. End of Meeting Notes After the meeting the following notes from Sophia Raza were sent after the 4th grade teachers met. They are included here as they relate directly the information discussed above: 1. Nobody felt the need for an extra wall of white board space, one wall would be sufficient. 2. We also did not feel the need for built-in art storage space, a portable rack would be fine. 3. Regarding the wooden cabinetry, we feel we do not necessarily make effective use of the cabinets with doors on them. (We would like the filing drawers) 4. All teachers would like the extra outside learning space. These notes will be considered substantially correct and complete unless otherwise notified in writing within five working days of receipt. 1 of 2 165 Tenth Street, Suite 100, San Francisco, CA 94103 tel 415.346.4040 fax 415.346.4103 mail@gelfand-partners.com www.gelfand-partners.com Meeting Notes Project: Project No: Meeting Subject: Duveneck ES Programming Meeting-Fifth Grade Meeting Date: 02/09/11, 12:00 PM Location: Duveneck Elementary School Those Present: John Lents Principal, Duveneck Elementary School (DES) Diane Gosney DES Lori Alvarez OCMI Larry Schadt Gelfand Partners Architects [GPA] Dan Goldstein GPA The following new items were discussed: New Items Action By ITEM 1.1 Introduction GPA General update of scope and state of campus and fifth grade. 2.1 General Layout Class composed of 3 activity arrangements – desk, rug, and breakout. Rug area is used about twice a week. Breakout spaces are becoming increasingly important. Exterior breakout space could be nice to have. Two large whiteboards would be useful, with all other surfaces tackable. One whiteboard should be adjacent to smartboard, and the other in a breakout area. Bulletin board surface on interior face of doors could be useful, but exterior ones too vulnerable to vandalism. As students need space to line up outside of class, it could be beneficial to keep class entrances from being too close together. Classrooms should be connected in pairs. Hanging backpacks outside on coat hooks is preferred over cubbies. Musical instruments are stored twice a week and are not worth having dedicated storage. Double sink useful for science experiments. 2.2 Storage 7 top and bottom units plus 3 additional low units near the sink would be sufficient, possibly less. Closet currently used as secure storage. 2.3 Technology Future technologies will include iPad devices and similar, requiring only a cart or charging station which could be secure, or locked in a closet or office. No computer stations needed. Duveneck ES 1004.00 Meeting Notes 2 of 2 2.4 Exterior Spaces Open to the idea of sliding glass doors to access outdoor spaces. Concerns about noise, especially on the stairs. Sound attenuation will be important. Eight classrooms will eat lunch downstairs outside. End of Meeting Notes After the meeting the following notes from Diane Gosney were sent after the 5th - we are interested in having the shared closet space that is bigger and can accommodate a small group of kids (like Ohlone). grade teachers met. They are included here as they relate directly the information discussed above: - we like the idea of having the backpack hooks outside the room (John, Mangla wanted to know if she could put wheels on her cubbies and have those as movable pieces of furniture in her new room?) - we would like to have an 8-10ft white board next to the Smart Board and also liked the idea of a smaller white board (6ft?) elsewhere in the room to use with small groups. - we would like as much of the wall space as possible to be tackable. - we would like one flat art storage cabinet for posters and paper. - we would like a cabinet or set of files that locks. - regular cabinets with adjustable shelves are desirable. - we would prefer to keep a separate desk and not use up potential cabinet space with a built in desk. - we do not need a wardrobe. These notes will be considered substantially correct and complete unless otherwise notified in writing within five working days of receipt.
